John Schmitt

John D. Schmitt is a proud two-time graduate of Eastern Illinois University, earning both his Bachelor and Master of Arts in Political Science, where he also served as a Graduate Assistant. A founding and charter member of the Phi-Alpha Zeta chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha, John has remained deeply involved with the fraternity throughout his life—serving as Chapter Advisor, Alumni Association Treasurer and Secretary, and chairing the 2022 Day of Giving Committee. In recognition of his service, he received Lambda Chi Alpha’s Order of Merit in 1996.
John spent 35 years serving in Illinois government, higher education, and the nonprofit sector, including roles with the Illinois Senate, Department of Natural Resources, and the Office of Governor James R. Thompson. He was the first Executive Director of the Illinois Conservation Foundation, helping raise over $16 million for conservation efforts, and later served as EIU’s Director of Development for the Chicagoland region, contributing to the university’s $60 million capital campaign before retiring in 2013. A longtime member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, he led the Chicago Chapter—then the largest in North America—as President in 2012 and maintains his CFRE certification.
A dedicated EIU alumnus, John served on the Alumni Association Board and received the Lou Hencken Alumni Service Award in 2004. He established the John D. Schmitt Endowed Scholarship supporting Lambda Chi Alpha officers and helped create multiple other scholarships benefitting fraternity members. In 2022, he was honored as EIU’s Homecoming Parade Grand Marshal, reflecting his lifelong commitment to the university and fraternity that shaped his journey.
